Thoughts on Genesis 11
The dispersion of the nations at Babel, is the demonstration of “God resists the proud”.
Sometimes when we’re finding it impossible to achieve a goal, it is necessary to check our hearts and examine the intent behind the ambition. God will always resist the proud but grace is given to the humble to achieve.
Pride and desperation to ‘achieve’ not only made it impossible for the people achieve their common goal to build a tower reaching the heavens, but also demonstrates the extent God will go to RESIST the proud.
God created confusion in their tongues and scattered them because they were over-ambitious in order to make a name for themselves -“Then they said, “Come, let’s build ourselves a city and a tower with its top in the heavens so that we may make a name for ourselves. Otherwise we will be scattered across the face of the entire earth.” Genesis 11:4 NET
Exactly what they feared, happened to them- “So the Lord scattered them from there across the face of the entire earth, and they stopped building the city.” Genesis 11:8 NET
In direct contrast to resistance, God gives GRACE to the humble.
The reward for humility and fearing the Lord is riches and honor and life (Proverbs 22:4). Therefore, “Humble yourselves before the Lord and he will exalt you.” (James 4:10)
“For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, but the one who humbles himself will be exalted.” Luke 14:11 NET
“Keep creating in me a clean heart. Fill me with pure thoughts and holy desires, ready to please you.” Psalms 51:10 TPT
Amen.
