1 KINGS 2

Solomon Inherited King David’s Throne !

In this chapter, Solomon was anointed King over Israel and Judah instead of Adonijah who was the rightful successor of King David after the death of Amnon, King David’s first son who forced Tamar (his half sister) and committed incest with her.

Adonijah actually made himself a king thinking that none else could be more qualified than him since David his father has become very old and would soon join his ancestors.

Adonijah did not act wisely. He almost towed the line of Absalom. The difference between his action and that of Absalom was that he did not threaten to kill his father King David to take over his throne. His was a peaceful demonstration.

I think that Adonijah had a hidden agenda. If he was wise and his heart was right within him he would have sought his father’s counsel before taking any step to ascend the father’s throne.

He might have heard about David’s intention of making Solomon to succeed him and he thought that it would be impossible since Solomon was a product of adultery. So he decided to take laws into his hands.

This is just to prove to us that God’s way is not our way, neither His thought our thought. God is the God of all flesh and the Father of all spirits.

At last, Adonijah came to the realisation that it is not by power and not by might but by God’s election can one sit on the throne of Israel.

Adonijah testified to this fact in his speech to Bathsheba, the King’s mother when he went to ask King Solomon to give him Abishag the Shunammite for a wfe who was King David’s maid in verse 15, And he said , Thou knowest that the Kingdom was mine, and that all Israel set their faces on me, that I should reign: howbeit the kingdom is turned about, and is become my brothers: for it was his from the LORD.

This shows that it is God who has the final say in the matters of life. It is not by qualifications or self righteousness but by God’s appointment. He will exalt whoever He wants to.

People of God, our God is set to give us that oversized miracle and He will make us fit for it in Jesus Christ’s Mighty Name! Amen!

Another point to ponder on is when King David instructed Solomon his son to deal with Joab and Shimei wisely making sure that their hoar heads do not go down to their graves in peace. From this episode, King David was vengeful! He forgave his offenders with a pinch of salt. In my own thinking , this is the spirit of a warrior. David had the power to kill whoever he wanted. But was it the fear of God that restricted him or the fear of the people? If it was the fear of God, why did he instruct Joab to send Uriah to the hottest part of the battle in order to kill him and take over his wife Bathsheba? Or did David think that he would be innocent since he was not the one who did the killing.

This one that he instructed Solomon to do, does it mean that it is a righteous thing for children to fight for their parents?

But the Bible says in Psalm 94:1 that vengeance belongs to God.

I believe all these things happened to get rid of people who would have constituted a threat to Solomon’s peaceful reign.

God knows the best!
