Job 5

Eliphaz the Temanite was one of Job’s seven friends who paid him a visit in the time of his calamities.

Their assumption was that Job suffered because of his sin. So Eliphaz was the first person to speak to Job after they had sat down with him in the dust for seven days mourning with him! In his speech Eliphaz was advising Job to look up to God because nobody will be able to help him in his condition not even any of the saints will answer him. Verse 1.

Eliphaz went further to admonish Job by listing some of the evils that can happen to sinners from verse 2-5 which are exactly what Job encountered such as loss of children, health, goods and properties.

In verses 6 and 7, Eliphaz made Job to understand that affliction and trouble don’t just spring from the dust and the ground to disturb man without a cause that man is born for trouble as the sparks fly upward due to man’s imperfections.

In verse 8, he told Job that as for him, he would rather seek unto God and unto God would he commit his cause.

From verse 9, Eliphaz started to remind Job of the great and marvellous things which God has done without number. Verse 10, God gives the rain upon the earth and sends water upon the fields. Verse 11, God sets up on high those who are low that those who mourn may be exalted to safety. Verse12, “He disappointed the devices of the crafty so that their hands cannot perform their enterprise.” He continued telling Job about what God can do up to verse 16.

In verse 17, he encouraged Job to be happy by saying, “Happy is the man whom God correcteth, therefore, despise not the chastening of the Almighty.”

He had concluded that God is the One punishing Job for his sin. That after the punishment that God will heal him and make him whole again if he receives his punishment gladly.

From verses 19-26, Eliphaz enumerated God’s promises of deliverance, protection, provisions, peace, preservation of children and properties, prosperity and longevity.

Finally in Verse 27, Eliphaz instructed Job that he should be thankful to God for his punishment. That he himself and his friends have proven that God’s promises are true and that Job should hear it and know God’s promises for himself that they are for his own good .

Lessons

1. When people encounter problems, most people may attribute the problems to their sin.

2. It is only God that knows human beings through and through.

3. Only God’s judgment is perfect.

4. Know God’s promises for your own good.

5. It is not every problem that people encounter that is because of their sin. It could be a test of faith. Be guided!
