Thoughts On Isaiah 8

Two things profoundly move my spirit from Isaiah 8:

1. Isaiah 8:1, 3-4
2. Isaiah 8:11-13

It is worth noting that up until chapter 6, Isaiah’s prophecies were largely declarative rather than instructional. However, after his transformative encounter with God in Isaiah 6, there was a noticeable elevation in his prophetic operation. He began to function in deeper realms of revelation and divine insight, embodying the “come up hither” dimension of prophecy.

1. The Prophetic Sign of the Prophetess’ Son (Isaiah 8:1, 3-4)
In this passage, God uses the birth of a child as a timeline for the unfolding of events. The son, born to an unnamed prophetess and given the symbolic name Maher-Shalal-Hash-Baz, becomes a living sign of the impending judgment on Damascus and Samaria by the king of Assyria.

This act illustrates the sovereignty of God, demonstrating that He not only speaks through His prophets but can also use the ordinary events of life—such as the birth of a child—to declare and establish His divine purposes.

This reminds us that God’s ways are higher than ours and that He is actively involved in the affairs of nations and individuals alike. His declarations are not arbitrary; they align with His overarching plan for humanity and the fulfillment of His word.

2. Personal Instructions from God (Isaiah 8:11-13).
In this passage, God gives Isaiah specific, personal instructions: not to fear what others fear, not to walk in the way of the people, and to sanctify the Lord as holy. These words were spoken to Isaiah “with a strong hand” (Isaiah 8:11), emphasizing their significance and urgency.

This highlights the importance of documenting divine encounters and instructions. If Isaiah had not recorded these personal revelations, we would have no insight into this profound moment of guidance.

Journals and records of God’s dealings with us are invaluable, as they preserve lessons, instructions, and affirmations that can guide future generations. They serve as a testament to how God leads, corrects, and reassures His people individually.

Isaiah 8 is a vivid reminder of the multifaceted nature of God’s communication with us. Through prophetic signs, He declares His control over the destiny of nations. Through personal instructions, He guides us into His will and strengthens our faith in challenging times.

Both aspects—prophetic signs and personal revelation—demonstrate that God is not distant but intricately involved in every aspect of our lives.

By recording these encounters, as Isaiah did, we not only deepen our own spiritual journey but also leave a legacy of faith for others to draw from.

Thoughts on Isaiah chapter 9

Themes: God’s Judgment against Israel, Hope of Freedom and the Promise of the Messiah.

Isaiah chapter 9 is a powerful Scripture that unveils God’s promises of redemption, freedom and great joy for His people.

The Prophet describes a day in Israel’s far future when the gloom will lift and glory will return. A child will become king of Israel but He will also be The Everlasting Father who will rule forever.
However, in Isaiah’s time, the LORD will judge Israel with destruction from other nations.

The promises in verse 6

For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon His shoulder: and His name shall be called: Wonderful, Counsellor, The Mighty God, The Everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.
This child will one day rule over the entire earth from His throne in Israel.

Verse 7 says, the authority of His rule will continue to grow and the peace He brings! He will rule on David’s throne and over His Kingdom.

Prayer

Father, we thank You for the gift of Your Son Jesus Christ into the world to liberate us from the bondage of sin and death! Amen!
Thank You Jesus!
