Commentary On Matthew 1
THEME: The GOD Who Weaves our Imperfect Stories into HIS Perfect Plan”
Main Verse:Matthew 1:21
“And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call HIS name JESUS: for HE shall save HIS people from their sins.”
Supporting Verses:
Isaiah 7:14
“Behold, a virgin shall conceive…”
Galatians 4:4–5
“When the fullness of time had come, GOD sent forth HIS Son…”
This chapter brings out very salient issues i would like us to consider
1. Introduction of JESUS
– as a real person. His lineage can be traced. HE didn’t just appear like Melchizedeck.. He was human and had a family that can be traced.
– With a dysfunctional background. Even JESUS had messy stories of scandal and shame — Tamar, Rahab, Ruth, Bathsheba, Mary —This shows us that GOD redeems brokenness and includes the unlikely in HiS redemptive plan. How very relieving.
– As the authentic and the expected Saviour, the son of David with proof. This can be seen with the numbering (14–14–14), structuring the genealogy into 3 sets of 14.
– The name, Immanuel. GOD with us. In JESUS, GOD is not distant — HE steps right into our mess to save us.
Takeaway:
GOD writes HIS greatest story using broken people, obscure moments, and quiet obedience. If HE could weave Tamar, Rahab, and Joseph into HIS plan, HE can weave our lives — no matter how chaotic — into HIS redemptive story.
Prayer Point:
LORD, help me trust Your weaving hand in my life story. Use my brokenness for Your glory in the mighty name of JESUS, Amen.
