Bible Commentary On Rehoboam

Psalm 12&14

Table of Contents

REHOBOAM was the first son of King Solomon and the grandson of King David.

He was the successor of king Solomon.

His Strengths:

1. He was bold and courageous!

This is proven by his action in 2 Chronicles chapter 11:1. When his kingdom was divided because of his foolishness instead of sitting down and regretting his actions, he gathered men of war for a battle to restore the kingdom.

2. He was faithful to the God of his father David because when the kingdom was divided, the priests, the levites and the people who believed in the God of Israel whom Jeroboam the son of Nebat cast out came to king Rehoboam in Jerusalem to worship and sacrifice to the LORD God of their fathers as seen in 2 Chronicles chapter 11,verses 13,14 and 16.

3. He was obedient to the voice of God. This can be seen in 2 Chronicles chapter 11 verses 2-4 when God spoke to him through the man of God Shemaiah forbidding him to go to war against his brethren Israel because the division of the king was from God.

4. He was repentant. He learnt from his mistakes when his kingdom was divided he didn’t need anybody to advise him to change his mind about the foolish counsel of his youthful friends.

5. He was wise. Verse 23 states that he dealt wisely and dispersed of all his children throughout all the countries of Judah and Benjamin, unto every fenced city and he gave them victual in abundance. He did this because he thought of making Abijah king the son of Maachah Absalom’s daughter whom he loved above all his wives.

His Achievements:

1. He built 15 cities for defence in Judah and fenced cities in Benjamin. 2 Chronicles 11:5-10

2. He fortified the strongholds and put captains in them and store of victual and of wine and oil. Verse 11.

3.He put shields and spears in several cities and made them exceedingly strong.Verse12.

4. He had Judah and Benjamin to himself.

5. He married 18 wives and 60 concubines.

6. He had 28 sons and 60 daughters.

His Mistakes

1. He forsook the wise counsel of the Elders of Israel and succumbed to the foolish counsel of his youthful friends which cost him a huge part of his magnificent kingdom. 2 Chronicles chapter 10 verses 13-16.

2. He multiplied wives which was against the rules of Kings in Israel. He towed the lines of his fathers David and Solomon by marrying many wives and having concubines.

3. He committed incest by marrying his cousins.

Lessons:

1. We should not ignore the wise counsel of the Elders like Rehoboam did.

2. No child of God should marry more than one wife or one husband.

3. We should always inquire from the LORD before taking any action. God by His mercy just intervened by sending Shemaiah to stop Rehoboam from going to war against his brethren. He just prepared for war without enquiring from God which would have been disastrous to him and his people!

3. Children of God should not commit incest by marrying their close relatives.

4. No child of God should have any concubine.
