Thoughts On Psalm 26

Themes: Integrity, confidence, trust, vindication, love, mercy and God’s judgment.

In this Psalm, David was bold enough to ask God to judge him because he was confident of his integrity and innocence.

He declared in verse 1, “Judge me O LORD for I have walked in mine integrity: I have trusted also in the LORD therefore I shall not slide.”

He went on and on and asked God to examine him in verse 2.

In verse 3, he made his boast in God’s loving kindness because he walked in God’s truth.

David knows very well that God loves righteousness.

He confessed before God that he has not sat with vain persons and that he hates the congregation of evil doers. Verses 4 and 5.

He promised that he will wash his hands in innocency so that he can compass the altar of God.

David knows that God has a zero tolerance for sin so he vowed to keep himself pure and holy in the sight of God so that he might be qualified to serve in God’s Sanctuary. As it is also written in Psalm 15 verses 1-5 and Psalm 24 verses 3-5.

Verse 7 of this chapter 26 states, “That I may publish with the voice of thanksgiving and tell of all thy wondrous works.” This he knows that sinners are not qualified to preach the gospel nor is their thanksgiving acceptable before God.

David declared his love for the habitation of God’s house and the place where God’s honour dwells in verse 8 of this chapter.

This shows that he loves the company of those who fear and honour God. Those who fear God honour Him.

In Verse 9, he prayed to God that he should not allow the evil that befall the wicked to befall him. “Gather not my soul with sinners nor my life with bloody men.”

There is wisdom in this prayer of David. It shows that if the righteous does not pray to God, there could be tendency for an evil occurrence. That is why Jesus says in Luke chapter 18, verse 1, that men ought always to pray and not to faint.

Imagine what happened to the children of Israel in the case of Achan and the accursed things where a small city, “Ai” defeated Israel in a battle and many precious and innocent lives were destroyed because there was sin in the camp of Israel.

In Verse 11, David promised to continue to walk in his integrity. He asked God to redeem him and show him mercy.

In Verse 12, he promised to bless the LORD in the congregation of God’s people.

5.There is peace and joy in righteousness and holy living.

Prayers

1. Thanks Father for the gift of righteousness in Christ Jesus! We are truly grateful!

2. Father, help us to walk before you and be blameless and boast in Your righteousness like David did in this chapter.

3. Father, hide us from the hour of temptation and deliver us from the evil one. Let not the evil that befall the wicked come near our dwellings so that we can walk and bask in Your Glory in Jesus Christ’s Mighty Name! Amen! Thanks Father!
