Reflections On Psalm 42
A DEEP YARNING FOR JEHOVAH
As I study this particular Psalm, I realise that I have sung the first verse of this Psalm often and passionately so, without really giving it a thought like I am doing today. The wording of this verse is a popular worship song in church today, but have we truly imagined or pictured an animal in dare need of water for survival?
I am privileged to have grown up in a place where animal husbandry is a common occupation with a hot and at times very dry environment. The only thing that can cause an animal to be in disarray apart from the presence of a predator is thirst!
In extreme thirst, the animal groans, becomes restless and in most cases uncontrollable!
The Psalmist used the description of the deer’s desperation, groanings and the state of chaos when in thirst to describe how he longs for deep fellowship with God particularly in the house of the Lord with God’s people. Ps 42 vs 1-7.
It is obvious that the water brooks is a cool, refreshing and resting place for the animal just as the Presence of the Lord is, in His sanctuary and among His people.
Lessons
Living souls never can take up their rest and satisfaction anywhere short of the living God .
– True desire of the presence of God encompasses the longing of an abode that promotes the worship of God and the fellowship of true believers, (Heb 10 vs 25) therefore we should covet these as we seek God vs 7.
– Times may come when God seems far from us or we are encompassed by challenges, (vs 6, 11) it is necessary to encourage ourselves and remember the times that God came through for us, (vs 6 – 11), for God will never forsake nor leave us Psalm 23 vs 4.
Prayer
1. Lord may we never stop longing for your awesome presence.
