Thoughts on Deuteronomy 6
“…that you may fear the Lord your God, to keep all His statutes and His commandments which I command you, you and your son and your grandson, all the days of your life, and that your days may be prolonged…”
(Deuteronomy 6:2)
Today’s passage provides the central theme of the book of Deuteronomy. It sets a pattern that helps us relate the word of God to our daily lives.
We are to love God, think constantly about His commandments, teach them to our children and live each day by the guidelines in His word.
God emphasised the importance of parents teaching the Bible to their children. This reminder to us is timely, considering the Bible study series we are currently examining, titled: “Raising a godly family in times like this”.
The principles have proved evergreen for Jews even in today’s world having been successful in making religion an integral part of life.
The reason for their success lies in the consciuosness of making religious education life- oriented and not just information-oriented as is now common practice among pentecostals.
Deutoronomy 6 is therefore admonishing parents not to use Churches and Christian schools as an escape route from the responsibilty of teaching their children the way of the Lord.
The Bible provides so many opportunities for object lessons and practical teaching. Other resources such as the LFF Bible study outlines, covering many topics are also available in the Church Office for a token.
Eternal truth are most effectively learned in the loving environment of a God-fearing home.
May His grace be multiplied to all parents in this important task 🙏
