Thoughts on Deuteronomy 8
“Your garments did not wear out on you, nor did your foot swell these forty years” Deuteronomy 8:4 (NKJV)
In the wake of the challenging situations we sometimes face, it is common to focus our prayers on those things we desperately need from God while forgetting His quiet blessings, which we didn’t even pray for, but are evident all the same. It is usually easy for us to take them for granted. For example, we seldom take notice or thank God when our car does not break down, our clothes do not tear, or our tools of trade do not break.
We sometimes even take the functioning of our body parts for granted. In the midst of their murmurings and complainings, the people of Israel also failed to take notice and took for granted the quiet blessings of God upon them.
It seems they didn’t notice that in 40 years of wandering in the wilderness, their clothes didn’t wear out and their feet didn’t swell. Thus they did not remember to give thanks to God for these blessings. God redirected their attention to this oversight.
What has been working well for you? What has been giving you good service? What has been lasting for a long time without breaking down or falling apart? Remember to thank God for these quiet blessings today
