Thoughts on Genesis 22

There’s so much to enthuse over in this chapter as we see another dimension to Abraham’s walk with God.

We have seen Abraham, called out from an idolatrous nation with no physical possession but a willingness to obey the voice of He that called him out.

We have see Abraham stumble at various times in his journey of faith, but God would just not let go of him. We have seen Abraham consent to Sarah’s arrangement for a consolation son through Hagar in Ishmael while the promise of his seed tarried. The 25 years of waiting ended in praise as Isaac came forth as promised.

Yet, God was not done with Abraham. He would test him to see what is in his heart. Will he hold to the promise keeper or withhold Isaac, his long awaited, much loved and only son.

Abraham passed the test. He was willing, he was obedient. He laid Isaac on the altar of sacrifice! God’s voice if affirmation sounded- “for now I know thou fearest God” The voice followed again, but this time pronouncing the Blessing upon him and his seed.

If ye be willing and obedient, ye shall eat the good of the land:

Isaiah 1:19 KJV

Wednesday last week, we started a study on the Power of Sacrifice. We discussed some of the benefits of when we raise an altar of sacrifice to God. Today in Genesis 22, the power of Sacrifice releases to Abraham a generational blessing.

No matter how long our journey with the Lord may have been, there are some junctions we will get to, that will require us undergoing the testing from God to see what is in our hearts. Sacrifice may just be one of those ways of doing that. What will God say of us after this?

The year of Open door may also require us sacrificing here and there, but we can be assured that if we are willing and obedient, we will eat the good of 2023.
