RACAD INSIGHTS FROM GENESIS CHAPTER 34
1And Dinah the daughter of Leah, which she bare unto Jacob, went out to see the daughters of the land. 2. And when Shechem the son of Hamor the Hivite, prince of the country, saw her, he took her, and lay with her, and defiled her.
Things of note in this chapter
1. Dinah chose to make friends with the daughters of the land.
2. Probably she went alone, believing nothing bad will come out of it.
3. What most people do not realize is that there is a remarkable difference between the children of light and the children of darkness. The children of light carry the glory of GOD which most of them do not see but the children of darkness recognize it with so much envy and will wait for any unguarded moment to grab at it.
4. Shechem saw the glory in the family of Jacob and wanted to possess it by all means.
5. As soon as Dinah strayed into his territory, and he saw that she was unguarded, he did not miss the opportunity to grab her for himself.
6. Of note is that this is the very first mention of rape in the bible and it was committed against a covenant child.
7. Did Dinah act wrongly? She never knew that an innocent visit could turn out so bad.
8. Why couldn’t GOD deliver her? She strayed out of the area of protection and lightly esteemed the instruction of GOD and was exposed to the enemy’s attack.
9. How careful can one be?
Answer: Apostle Paul warns us – do not be unequally yoked with unbelievers. There is nothing to be careful about, just obey Apostle Paul.
My take
1 Be careful where you choose to go and who you choose to hang out with.
2. Looks can be very deceptive. For Dinah to feel free to visit her friends connotes that they must have been friendly.
I pray believers will learn from this account. No matter how friendly and loving an unbeliever is, be very careful, friendship or marriage with them is like casting pearls before pigs. And this is one union, the LORD HIMSELF detests and frowns at. The consequences are beyond the physical expression.
Any believer involved in any relationship with an unbeliever should learn from this chapter and drop it like it is hot fire.
Apostle Paul warns us not to be unequally yoked with unbelievers. Dinah’s case is a classic example.
