Are you a new believer who just gave his life to Christ and you have come across lots of people making statements like: “you need to pray”, “prayer is the key”, “you cannot scale through life without prayers” etc, and you’re wondering, why should we pray? Why is prayer so important and what’s always the urgency with prayer?

So first, what is prayer? Prayer is an act of communicating with God, it’s simply pouring out your heart to God, telling Him everything; from your fears, to your dreams, to your requests, even to life general issues.
Praying to God is not a sign of weakness, it’s a clear indication that you acknowledge that you need God, you love Him, and that you trust Him and are willing to hand over the course of your life journey to Him (Hebrews 11:6)
So why is it important to pray?
Let’s put it this way, why is it important to communicate in any given relationship? It’s important to communicate because it helps you know the other person better, it helps your relationship grow and lastly it helps you both to build trust over time.
Imagine having a child who doesn’t talk to you at all, or does so only once in a while, I’m sure you won’t like that, so also prayer is something you need to do on a daily basis, because it is in communicating with God through prayers that you get to know Him, understand His ways, learn His will for your life, and that will eventually help you become fulfilled.
Prayer is not over-hyped as some may think, neither can the role of prayer be overemphasized in the life of a believer, prayer is indeed the key that grants access to many doors as you go through life.
Now to the Question, Why Should We Pray?
It is important to be committed to a daily prayer routine because it has lots of benefits, some of which are:
1. Spiritual Growth:
To know more about God, to begin to operate effectively in the spirit realm and to be able to command results from the spirit realm, you need to pray, (James 5:17)
2. To Overcome Temptations;
Do you often fall into temptations, it’s because your prayer fire is low, to overcome temptations when they come your way, you need to create and maintain an active prayer life, this will help you to be spiritually sensitive so as to know when the enemy is coming your way and to know how to overcome it. (1 Thessalonians 5:17, 1 Peter 5:8)
3. To Do Exploits For God;
In order to become a vessel through which God’s wonders will be done on earth, you need to pray, you cannot just desire to do great exploits for God, you have to move beyond wishing, to praying fervently that God’s will be done on earth as it is in heaven (Matthew 18:18, Matthew 17:21)
4. To Get Clarity On Life Issues:
In order to get clarity on certain life issues, you need to maintain a life of commitment to prayers, many at times, we come across tough situations of life that demands that we make good decision, without praying to God, you may end up making wrong decisions, but when you pray the Lord will open your eyes to see what you need to see, and He grant you wisdom to make the best decision (James 1:17, Proverbs 3:5)
5. To Break free From Curses:
Are you suffering from several curses and negative patterns in your family? You need prayers to be free from all operations of the enemy, the bible helps us to know that the weapon of our warfare are not carnal but are mighty through God to the pulling down of strong holds, prayer is that powerful weapon that you need to stop all the negative patterns and curses running in your family and around you, the more you pray, the more the activities of the enemy will be driven far from you. (James 4:7, Job 22:28)
