2 SAMUEL 19
In my own judgment, Joab shouldn’t have killed Absalom because King David has already warned him and his other warriors that they should not harm Absalom for his sake. Even though Absalom staged a coup against his father, I believe that there is some other way Joab and his team could have punished him without killing him. Look at how they made King David to weep and mourn over his son again!
I know King David was a kind hearted man even though he was a man of War. He was compassionate towards his people. He wept and lamented for King Saul and Jonathan his friend when they died in a battle! He wept and mourned for Abner when Joab killed him. King David cursed Joab for that cruel murder! If he could weep profusely for others, how much more for his beautiful son Absalom whom the Bible described in 2 Samuel 14 : 25 that in all Israel, there was nobody to be praised as Absalom! His beauty was without blemish from the sole of his feet to the crown of his head!
Joab was a hard hearted soldier! Although, he might have been compelled by the rule of the law to act that way, but because of the father’s love for his son which one cannot quantify, he should have spared the life of Absalom as requested King David.
Another point to consider is Shimei the son of Gera,the Benjamite who was a relative of King Saul; this guy was the man who cursed , mocked, insulted , stoned and humiliated King David when Absalom his son revolted against him.
There was no kind of abusive word that this man did not use against King David.
When God gave King David victory over the situation, this same man came bowing down and begged King David for forgiveness. If not that David had the mind of God, he would have allowed Abishai the son of Zeruiah, Joab’s brother to finish him right there!
That is how most human beings are. When it is well with you, they will want to be identified with you just to protect their lives not because they are happy with you. But when things are not working out the way expected, that is when you will see their true colour!
People of God, the Lord will expose our enemies! The way God turned the battle around in favour of David and his enemies who laughed at him scornfully came bowing down to him asking him to spare their lives, that is how the lives of our enemies will be at our mercy in Jesus Christ’s Mighty Name! Amen!
Lessons Learnt
1. Do not try to help God to fight your battles. Leave it for Him. HE knows how to handle it better than you!
2. Learn to forgive people. Walk in love and the wiles of the enemy will be incapacitated! They will not be able to harm you .
3. Their evil devices will be carried out against them!
PRAYER
Father, help me to love people the way you love in Jesus Christ’s Mighty Name!
Father, help me to live my life according to Your will in Jesus Christ’s Mighty Name! Amen!
