Commentary On Zechariah 7
Theme: When Will We Stop And Ask Why?
Main Verse
Zechariah 7:2-5
…The people sent Sherezer, with Regem-Melech and his men, to the house of GOD, to pray before the LORD, and to ask the priests who were in the house of the LORD of hosts, and the prophets, saying, “Should I weep in the fifth month and fast as I have done for so many years?”
“Say to all the people of the land, and to the priests: ‘When you fasted and mourned in the fifth and seventh months during those seventy years, did you really fast for Me?
Supporting verses
Isaiah 58:3
‘Why have we fasted,’ they say, ‘and You have not seen? Why have we afflicted our souls, and You take no notice?’
Proverbs 28:9
If anyone turns a deaf ear to my instruction, even their prayers are detestable.
James 4:3
And even when you ask, you don’t get it because your motives are all wrong.
For 70 years, 2 generations of the children of Israel fasted twice annually, yet their conditions were no better.
Imagine it took them seventy years of fasting, praying, mourning, and getting no real change—before they finally woke up and dared to ask:
“Should we still keep doing this?” (v.3)
That moment of enquiry is powerful.
Even though it was late…Better be late, than never. Finally, they sensed something was off. Fasting goes with prayers.
Prayers is a dialogue, but for 70 years,it has been more like a monologue.. It was a cause for concern. So they dared to ask what we, today, often avoid:
“Why does it feel like GOD isn’t responding?”
“Are we doing all this… but missing HIM?”
Or
“should we just keep continuing in all these spiritual exercises with the hope and faith that somehow, one day, the LORD will respond?”
In Zechariah 7:2-3, we find a very salient question for not just the individual believer, but for the Church Today:
Why are our worship services impressive—but our communities remain unchanged?
Why do we hold powerful conferences—yet see growing spiritual apathy?
Why is the church visibly busy, but invisibly bleeding?
Why are we fasting, giving, serving—yet not moving the heart of GOD?
Like Israel, could it be that GOD is waiting for us to stop, reflect, and ask why?
Lessons:
There is power in enquiry.
There is healing in holy questioning. GOD welcomes honest seeking over hollow routine.
Prayer Point:
LORD, awaken us.
Shake us out of religious momentum.
Give us the courage to stop and ask, “Why?”—and the grace to return to You when we realize where we’ve drifted.
May our devotion begin to carry Your presence again in the mighty name of JESUS, Amen

Reflections:
“BEHOLD YOUR KING IS COMING”

Behold, Your King is coming to you; He is Just and having salvation, Lowly and riding on a donkey, A colt, the foal of a donkey. (Zach. 9:9)
Prophesy Fulfilled
According to John 12: 13 -14, the prophecy of Zechariah concerning the TRIUMPHAL ENTRY INTO JERUSALEM was fulfilled.
“A great multitude that had come to the feast cried : “Hosanna! Blessed is He who comes in the Name of the Lord! THE KING OF ISRAEL!”
Immutability
Hebrews 6:17 confirms the IMMUTABILITY of God’s Word. Hence, all jots and titles of THE WORD will be fulfilled.
(Matthew 5:18)
THE END TIMES
Many prophesies concerning the Lord, Jesus as The Messiah, are being fulfilled.
As we look forward to the end of the age, it is critical to remind the world of the following IMMINENT events:
1. The Rapture of the Church
2. The Great Tribulation & The Rise of the Antichrist
3. The Abomination of Desolation
4. The Millennial Kingdom
5. The last battle
6. The Great White Throne Judgment
7. The New Creation when the NEW JERUSALEM descends from heaven.
How Does These Concern Me?
This is to remind all living souls of Three Inevitable Truths:
An Imminent Return Of The King
Jesus is coming soon! (Acts 1:11)
Imminent Death
It is appointed for men to die once, after this judgment.
(Hebrews 9:27)
A Certain Day Of His Reward
“Behold, I come quickly and my reward” (Rev. 22:12)
Conclusion
Certainly, the Lord Jesus, the King of Kings is coming soon!
ARE WE READY?
Prayer
King Jesus, we pray for the grace to rise with you at the Rapture of Church as well as the privilege to reign with You in the Millennial Kingdom.
Amen.
