When the children of Israel saw the thunderings and the lightnings, the noise of the trumpets and the mountain smoking, they were afraid and moved and stood afar off.

Moses told them not to fear, that God wants to prove them and that His fear may be upon their faces so that they may not sin. God also reassured them that He talked with them from heaven to let them know that He is real and that they should not make any other God’s for themselves.

God instructed them to make an altar of earth for Him. If they will make Him an altar of stone, they should not build it with hewn stone because if they lift up their tools upon it the altar will be polluted.

In Verse 26( the last verse ) God warned them, “Neither shall thou go up by steps unto mine altar that thy nakedness be not discovered thereon.”
