Thoughts on Leviticus 6

“….Then it shall be, because he has sinned and is guilty, that he shall restore what he has stolen, or the thing which he has extorted, or what was delivered to him for safekeeping, or the lost thing which he found, or all that about which he has sworn falsely. He shall restore its full value, add one-fifth more to it, and give it to whomever it belongs, on the day of his trespass offering….”

In verses 1-6, we discover that stealing involves more than just taking from someone. Finding something and not returning it or refusing to return something borrowed are other forms of stealing. These are counted as sins against God and not just your neighbour, a stranger or even a business. Restitution is therefore recommended as not just a way of making things right with God,(which most people do anyways), but also making the wrong right with men.

This idea was also expressed by the Lord Jesus in Matthew 5:23-24.
The onus is therefore on you to not just confess your sin to God if you have obtained something deceitfully, but to also apologize to the owner and return the stolen items- with 20% interest!
